Abstract

This paper focuses on Zenichi Mano and his design management plan at Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. Based on written materials and interviews. The research results can be summarized into following four points.
1) Mano repeatedly and strongly appealed the importance of product design to Matsushita executives and related departments. 2) For the campaign, Mano established a design council, formed a design research group, and organized a presentation to define design principles of the company. 3) Mano attempted to unify a design organization. However, it was difficult to obtain an understanding of the company, and designers were kept distributed to each division. 4) Mano worked based on the belief that formative design is the core of design management and assessment. On the other hand, Matsushita was seeking for organizational design management.
