Abstract

This paper focuses on Zenichi Mano, and his contribution to product design development in Matsushita in 1950s. Based on literature and patent design registration research, his main achievements can be summarized into following four points.
1) Mano‘s design works varies from refrigerators, electric fans, electric accumulators, radio receivers, television sets to campaign trucks. 2) Since joining the company in July 1951, Mano conducted a number of design development projects. He obtained at least 183 design registration records by the end of 1955. 3) Most of those registered works were commercialized by several departments in Matsushita, and well received by the Japanese market and design world. 4) Mano's name can not be seen on the design register record of the electric fan released in 1951. The product is, nevertheless, commonly known as the first task given to Mano by Matsushita. Numerous evidences also indicate that he is the actual designer.
