Abstract

In order to detect fiber faults before communication service is affected, a test and measurement system using a maintenance-band wavelength of 1.6-1.7 μm has been proposed. Experimentally clarified correlations between 1.65-μm and 1.31/1.55-μm losses in both optical subscriber lines using standard fibers and trunk lines using dispersion-shifted fibers in the field are given. Thus, a 1.65-μm surveillance and test system is presented.
