A stream order network model for predicting basin-wide distribution of stream temperatures

Abstract

A basin-wide distribution model was developed for stream temperature prediction along a river network. In order to express the channel segment connection from sources to the river mouth, the model used Horton's geomorphologic laws for channel networks and river basins with stream ordering systems. Within the each stream link, a theoretical solution derived from a thermal energy equation was used to predict longitudinal variation of stream temperatures. The model furthermore took into account solar radiation reduction due both to riparian vegetation and basin topography, as well as thermal advection from lateral land-uses. Comparison of the model prediction with basin observation in the Ibo River of Japan showed very good agreement for the thermal structure along the river network for almost all seasons, excluding an autumnal month in which the thermal budget on the water surface was just changed from positive to negative at the moment.
