An experimental result of influence of visual presentation method on subjective evaluation of moving boat noise

Abstract

The shift in the impression evaluation of a sound based on the visual stimulus has been thoroughly examined by many researchers. In this study, we focus on humans' subjective evaluation of a noise stimulus from a moving source. Our objective is to clarify the influence of visual information on the subjective evaluation of noise from one moving boat. In this experiment, we compare the influence of audial-And-visual stimuli and discuss the effect of presentation size of visual information on the subjective evaluation of moving boat noise. We use a 24-inch monitor and headphones to allow participants to hear the noise at a sound pressure level approximately 70 dB. The visual information is given in three forms: A video of a moving boat, a background image without the boat, and a word describing the type of boat. The results suggest that the subjective evaluation of the intensity of the loud noise from a moving boat decreases when visual information about the moving boat is given.
