Abstract

UAV-based hyperspectral imaging is an emerging research field that enables new domains of research in agriculture and many other research areas. With the advancement of technology and the sensor size, the camera size has been reduced enough that it is now possible to mount these cameras in small UAVs. This presents many advantages over the traditional methods of hyperspectral image acquisition methods such as satellites and manned aircraft. In this short paper, we introduce a new lightweight hyperspectral camera and present the data acquisition process followed to obtain the hyperspectral images. Finally, spectral signatures obtained using a field spectrometer were compared with the data obtained from the drone. Hyperspectral camera signatures from different targets were comparable with the field spectrometer signatures to an extent, and most importantly, they were differentiable.
