Design and development of mobile permanent magnet system using the gdbacuo superconductors

Industrial applications of melt-processed bulk superconducting materials are stilltremendously limited by the ineffective method of magnetization of bulk materials. Herewe report the most compact, lightweight, mobile permanent high-Tc superconductingmagnetizing system using GdBa2Cu3Oy "Gd-123" melt-processed material. The magnetwas constructed using ten annular co-axially oriented single-domain bulk superconductorswith their c-axes along vertical direction. Each bulk has the dimensions of 80mm outer and 50 mm inner diameter, and 20 mm thickness. It was found that the trappedfield at the center of the ring magnet reaches 0.75 T and 2.6 T for a single ring and tenpiled rings, respectively. As the number of layers of the bulks increases, the magneticfield in the center position rises and becomes flatter in the horizontal plane. Using thisnew permanent magnet set-up, we successfully magnetized several melt-processed bulksamples and measured their trapped field distribution at 77 K. The high-Tc lightweightrare-earth permanent magnet system is simple, compact and the magnetization process isquick. The present approach should contribute to utilize this bulk HTS material in a widevariety of industrial applications.
