Abstract

The EGR(Engine Gas Recirculation) system is applied to domestic passenger car diesel engines as a method for NOx reduction in order to satisfy the 10 mode emission regulation since October 1st in 1986 in Japan. However, valve train wear is considered to be accelerated by the use of the EGR system. In this reserch, accelerated wear was reproduced by means of firing test modes (Idle EGR Mode and Soot Mix Mode), and the wear amount of the cam and rocker arm pad, the morphology of the pad surface and wear debris, and the engine oil degradation were investigated. As a result, it is concluded that the accelerated wear is mainly caused by the corrosive wear with sulfuric acid on the nascent surface formed with the soot in the oil. Moreover, the adoptability of the developed high chromium cast iron rocker arm pad is also discussed.
