Abstract
Theoretical and experimental investigations are reported concerning an excess loss due to a lossy outer layer attached to cladding in multimode step-index fibers, for structural design purposes. Equations for the excess loss are derived using electromagnetic theory. Excess loss is measured for fibers fabricated by chemical-vapor inside and outside deposition. The measured values are in good agreement with the calculated ones.
