Abstract

The (four-dimensional) gravity coupled to a scalar field with potential V(φ) was discussed. It was found that the potential satisfied the positive energy theorem for solutions that asymptotically tend to a negative local minimum. It was observed that for a large class of such potentials, there was a open set of smooth initial data that evolved to naked singularities. Analysis suggests that potentials with a local Minkowski minimum lead to violations of cosmic censorship in asymptotically flat spacetimes.
