Impact injury analysis of the human head

A specific FE human head model, which was based on the Voxel approach and proposed by Hollister was developed to numerically analyze the human head injury mechanism. The model resulted in the better understanding of the relationship between the impact of the head and its responses. Several simulations were executed to find the relationship between the impact direction and head and brain responses. Simulation of the existing cadaver impact experiment and comparing dynamic responses resulted in the model validation. The computed pressure history curves in the brain were in accordance with the experimental ones. The injury mechanisms were studied by simulating frontal and occipital head simulations. The result showed that the brain damage by impact load was related to the Von-Mises rather stress than the pressure and thus it was evaluated that Von-Mises stress can be useful for the determination of the brain damage.
