Abstract

Our new robotics research concept called Computers & Dynamics (C&D) and our experimental robot platform NOAC-0 (NTT Open Architecture Controller-0) are presented. A basic concept of C&D is that robots are a new generation of computers that execute tasks on real objects in the real world. Computers and robots are compared in terms of their historical evolution to point out three major technical problems with robots. To overcome these problems, we introduce a robot task design method based on a structured and hierarchical task description concept and also show that the communication capability of robots is an important factor for sensor-based robots. Next a system overview of our experimental robot platform NOAC-0 and its application examples are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of our new robot task design method. Finally we conclude that the communication capability of robots is a very important function to make a new relationship between electronic commerce and manufacturing.
