Abstract
A new type of transmission line resonator is proposed and is applied to 18-GHz-band heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) oscillators, demonstrating state-of-the-art phase-noise performance as an oscillator that does not use a dielectric resonator. The phase noise of -96 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset is believed to be the best performance reported for HBT oscillators. The open stubs resonator used in the oscillator is also suited for monolithic integration and should find a broad range of applications, including field effect transistor oscillators.
