N2 - Distributed strain in an optical fiber cable frozen in a conduit was measured for the first time using Bnllouin optical-fiber time domain analysis, Experimental results reveal that slotted-core type single-mode optical fiber cable suffers from the intense compressive force induced as the water in a conduit freezes along the cable. The compressed optical cable buckles and optical fibers in the cable break. In addition, the experimental results show that strain measurement has the potential for use in predicting cable failure caused by water freezing in a conduit.
