Abstract

This paper describes measurement equipment developed for evaluating transmission characteristics of long optical transmission line. The equipment for the transmission bandwidth measurement is stabilized by coupling an oblique-cut fiber to a laser diode and by superimposing a low frequency signal onto the baseband signal. Optical loss in 5 km a transmission line can be measured using the optical time domain reflectometer with a gated photomultiplier and digital averaging. An optical fiber identifier, utilizing radiation power due to fiber bends, is also described.
