N2 - There are various causes of traffic congestion on expressways. One of them is a car accident which causes a non-recursive bottleneck in that time and location of its occurrence is not known in advance. For rapidly solving this type of bottleneck, velocity control called jam absorption driving (JAD) would be effective, which have cars running before the bottleneck point intentionally slow down. This paper studies performance of JAD with the focus of how the control section should be adaptively configured depending on the location of the accident, assuming that detection of the bottleneck occurrence and instruction of velocity control is given with the help of V2X communication system. The results of traffic simulation show that JAD improves the average velocity by 50% on average compared to the average velocity when no velocity control is applied, and also show that the performance is better when control is not applied in a section just behind the bottleneck point.
