Abstract

Acoustic spectro-microscopy has been developed and applied to the quantitative nondestructive evaluation of PVD/CVD TiN coated WC/Co cermets. From the measured Rayleigh wave velocity dispersion with frequency, the effect of Co-phase agglomeration in microstructure was evaluated: microstructural change with increase of Co content reflects on the measured acoustic structure. For PVD/CVD TiN coated WC/Co, the Rayleigh wave velocity dispersion curves for various coating thickness were assembled into one master curve which is intrinsic to coating procedure. Direct comparison of measured master curves with predicted dependency of the Rayleigh wave velocity on frequency yields different elastic properties both for PVD and CVD TiN coatings.
