Abstract

A dual-spiral antenna printed on a dielectric substrate is numerically analysed. The radiation characteristics such as the radiation pattern, axial ratio, and radiation efficiency are calculated on the basis of the current distribution. It is revealed that, when the dielectric substrate allows only a single surface wave mode to exist, the dual-spiral antenna has a high radiation efficiency (73%) over a wide frequency range (8.4 %), radiating a circularly polarised wave. Further calculation show that the radiation efficiency rapidly decreases, when a second surface wave mode (TE1) appears.
