Abstract

We have investigated superconducting properties of Sm-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors with an emphasis placed on the performance of Sm-Ba-Cu-O as a stator of a magnetic bearing for the flywheel energy storage system in comparison with Y-Ba-Cu-O. Sm-Ba-Cu-O shows higher Jc values or levitation forces, lower creep rate, and lower ac loss than Y-Ba-Cu-O, and therefore one can conclude that Sm-Ba-Cu-O is superior to Y-Ba-Cu-O as a stator material for a magnetic bearing.
