N2 - The development of a photoresponsive culture surface (PRCS) and a technology to exfoliate cells selectively from the culture surface was discussed. The adhesiveness of the PRCS to cells can be controlled by irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light. PRCS was prepared by spin coating a 1,2-dichloroethane solution containing a copolymer synthesized from methylmethacrylate and methacrylamide monomer containing a nitrobenzospiropyran chromophore. An inverted optical microscope was used to observe the cells seeded onto the irradiated surface. Many cells were observed to adhere to and multiply on the irradiated region of the PRCS. The density of cultured cells in the irradiated region was found to be greater than in the unirradiated region.
