Abstract

This paper presents simple unipolar excitations for switched reluctance (SR) motors. To achieve unified and effective drive schemes, it is assumed that the self-inductance distribution includes only a fundamental component and simple unipolar currents are applied to the excitation. Due to the simple methodology, it is easy to evaluate their performances such as the torque-current ratio, torque ripple ratio, required dc-link voltage of the inverter, and motor efficiency. In addition, the proposed excitation techniques have greater performances than a conventional one. In this paper, the effectiveness is verified by performing simulations with the finite element analysis on an 8/12 SR motor.
