Abstract
Measurements of the static forces were performed for various types of super-conducting magnetic bearings at liquid nitrogen temperature. It was found that the stiffness of the superconducting bearing was rather small; however, both the electromagnetic forces and the stiffness could be increased by using a combination of a thrust and radial bearing. It was also found that the stiffness could be increased by using the attractive force due to flux pinning. Based on these measurements, a practical superconducting magnetic bearing was designed and constructed, where a 2.4 kg rotor could rotate at 33 000 rpm.
