Abstract
Progress in optical fiber transmission, LSIs and digital technology is remarkable. On the other hand, from the service request viewpoint, the most important conditions for a future network involve measures to meet traffic overload, and alleviation of the limit to number and bit rate for channels which a subscriber can access. This paper proposes that a new type of network called SMNET (Subscriber Multiplexed Network) can efficiently meet the future service requests by using technologies expected in the future. Concerning SMNET, this paper discusses network architecture, reasonable network topology, expected results from the service and cost viewpoints and experimental results.
