Abstract

The authors have investigated the transient properties of side-mode injection locking in a Fabry-Pérot laser diode (FPLD). The purpose of the investigation is to clarify the possibilities of the transmitters and optical networks that are proposed in this paper. In the proposed network applications, both continuous and pulsed lights are used as a master light. The long shut down time for a continuous light or long off time for a pulsed light degrades the side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of slave laser diodes (LDs). The authors have experimentally clarified a value of SMSR degradation as a function of the ON-OFF pulsed period and also a side-mode dependence of SMSR degradation. Unwanted modes are nearly suppressed when the ON-OFF period T is less than 0.2 ns. To confirm the measured data, the authors calculate the transient properties of injection locking using multimode-rate equations. The calculated results are in good agreement with the authors' experimental data. The authors also discuss the influence of discontinuous light injection on the proposed networks.
