Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (B-OTDR) operated in the 1.60-1.65 μm wavelength region is a technique incorporated for in-line monitoring and preventive maintenance in optical fiber networks. 1.65-μm B-OTDR is demonstrated which is capable of measuring both fiber-distributed strain and optical loss. It is realized with an optical frequency shifter using a lithium-niobate phase-modulator (LN-PM) and a high-performance Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) in the 1.65-μm band. Strain and optical loss distributions measured in 30- and 100-km-long optical fibers, respectively, are presented.
