A study on the influence of 3-T MRI driving sound to assistant nurse

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment of high magnetic field generates loud sound of around 100 dB. Assistant nurse works in near field of the equipment for patient's help. It is necessary for the assistant nurses' hearing protection to analyze the driving sound. This paper shows the result of analysis of the driving sound in near field of a 3-T MRI equipment. The analyzed sounds were the driving sound of T2 weighted imaging (T2W) sequence and the driving sound of echo planar imaging (EPI) sequence. Each measuring points were the space where the assistant nurse works in the MRI examination room. Analyzing methods was 1/3 octave band analysis, as the methods to know the acoustical environment in the working space of the assistant nurse. Analyzing methods were equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level (LAeq), spectrum analysis and 1/3 octave band analysis, as the methods to know the acoustical environment in the working space of the assistant nurse. As the result, maximum of LAeq of the driving sound of T2W was 86.0 dB; maximum value of peak frequency was 79.2 dB at center frequency 630 Hz of octave band. Maximum of LAeq of the driving sound as EPI was 98.1 dB; maximum value of peak frequency 1000 Hz of octave band.
