NTT plans to upgrade its access networks in order to be able to respond quickly to demands for multimedia services by deploying optical cables in the distribution section as well as in the feeder section of access networks. For this purpose we have developed new type of self-supporting aerial optical cables and related fiber splicing technologies. The self-supporting aerial optical cables are SZ-slotted rod type for easy mid-span access. A compact fusion splicing machine can splice up to 4-fiber ribbon using a small battery for power. Therefore, this is suitable for an aerial environment. This machine can handle both single-mode and multimode fibers. An economical mechanical splicing method for mono-coated fibers has also been developed. This mechanical splice is made by molding so it is suitable for mass production.
