In recent years in Japan, an increasing number of malpractice cases have been reported, more than half of which are related to drug labels or packages [1]. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare is now using a similar name search engine to ban new names for medicines that resemble existing names. However, no such action has addressed the issue of appearance similarity. We carried out a questionnaire evaluation with 412 pharmacists. They looked at images of imaginary PTP sheets and then replied with the names of real medicines having PTP sheets that they thought resembled the displayed sheets in appearance. This article presents our analysis of the results.
