This paper proposes and analyzes experimentally an SSMA signal transmission over a QPSK modulated signal to achieve higher transmission efficiency per transponder and to facilitate a lower transmitter for small earth stations Experimental results show that under the condition of D/U=20 dB, the required Pe=1x10-4 of the QPSK channel is achieved with only one dB degradation by employing coding rate=7/8 FEC, and the required Pe=1x10-4 of the SSMA channel is achieved with 7 dB degradation by employing coding rate=l/2 FEC. The link budget shows that the proposed scheme makes it possible to use a low power SSPA for small earth stations.
