CrN is a typical thin, hard coating to have been used in various automotive parts. Since severe endurance and toughness are required in practice, several promising surface material processing and design methodologies are necessary with consideration of cost-performance balancing. For that purpose, the tribological fundamentals are quite important to describe the wear and fracture behavior of CrN coating. New procedure is proposed to evaluate the wear and friction behavior of CrN coating on the basis of the wear map for the bulk CrN materials. Furthermore, the chlorine ion-implantation is successfully applied to CrN coating for modification of the wear mechanism.
