Two methods of real time encoded MPEG2 video transmission over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks using ATM block transfer/delayed transmission (ABT/DT) and ABT/immediate transmission (IT) as bandwidth reservation protocol are presented. For each method, the algorithm uses ABT to adjust the transmission rate and encoding parameter for each frame. Performance evaluation for picture replacement control method showed that quality degradation during picture replacement is comparable to constant bit rate transmission. For reference switching model, it achieves the same quality as one layer encoding method for frames without cell loss and the same quality as two layer encoding at frames with cell loss.
