The effects of dilution gas species and dilution levels on extinction and structure of counter-flowing CH4-O2 diffusion flame were studied experimentally and numerically. Both CH4 and O2 were diluted with same species, N2, Ar or CO2. N2 and Ar were selected as inert or nearly inert species and CO2 was added as a major ingredient ideal inert gas. Thus, the fictitious CO2 (f-CO2) was used as the perfect inert, which has same transport and thermal properties as those of CO2. The OPPDIF code of the CHEMKIN III and the GRI-Mech 2.11 database were used for the numerical calculation. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental results including the other researchers. The extinction limits expanded in the order of CO2, N2, and Ar. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 30th International Symposium on combustion (Chicago, IL 7/25-30/2004).
