When a heated brittle strip is quenched at a constant speed, several crack propagation patterns, such as straight, oscillating or branched crack appear. In the present study, the crack propagation patterns are investigated under various conditions that are determined by temperature jump between a heated specimen and a cold bath and by descent speed. The results show that the crack propagation patterns change from straight to oscillating, then to branching with increasing temperature difference and with decreasing descent speed. Furthermore, the crack patterns can be classified by the normalized stress intensity factor that is proposed in the present study.
