A circularly polarized fan beam is formed by using an array antenna composed of two-arm elliptical spiral elements whose ellipticity is within the range from 1.0 to 0.4. The fan beam has the maximum value in the direction normal to the antenna plane. The half-power beamwidth for an ellipticity of 0.4 is wider than that for a conventional round spiral array antenna by 12°. A tilted beam is also realized using an array antenna composed of single-arm round spiral elements. The array radiates a fan beam in a direction of 24° off-normal to the antenna plane. The axial ratio in this direction remains within 3 dB over a frequency range of 5.7 GHz to 7.0 GHz.
