Long processing times for treatment, poisonous deterioration by unfavoured chemical components and small amounts of target materials are all difficulties encountered with mechanical alloying by milling type apparatus. A research team at the University of Tokyo has investigated an alternative processing route that makes active use of local shear material flow and high hydrostatic pressure. T. Aizawa, K. Tatsuzawa and J. Kihara report on its performance in handling an Ag-Cu system.
