In the wake of the rare-earth crisis of 2010, two major projects for the development of magnetic materials have been launched and are being promoted. MagHEM (Technology Research Association of Magnetic Materials for High-Efficiency Motors) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and ESICMM (The Elements Strategy Center for Magnetic Materials) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). (The Elements Strategy Initiative Center for Magnetic Materials). Both are 10-year projects starting in 2012, with a budget of over 20 billion yen. This is about 5% of the budget of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in the field of energy conservation and environment (40 billion yen/year). It can be understood that there are high expectations from the government. The research results of these national projects are summarized in detail in Reference [3], so please refer to that. In this paper, we introduce the development of magnetic materials for motors by other research institutes and companies, and their applications.
