As high efficiency motors, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) have been focused. Especially for the Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), higher torque density motors have been required because the space in the hood is limited. Conventional PMSMs only use fundamental component of magnetic flux and current to generate torque. In this paper, the motor that can use all of harmonics of magnetic flux and current is designed. This motor employs full bridge inverter and fully pitched winding, and uses optimal current to maximize both magnet torque and reluctance torque. However, the motor has a large torque ripple because of adding square wave current. This paper describes the cause of torque ripple and proposes a method to reduce torque ripple.
