Non-nearest-neighbor jumps in 2D diffusion: Pd on W(110)

The movement of individual Pd atoms on W(110) was examined to study the non-nearest-neighbor jump processes in diffusion of atoms on a 2D surface. The distribution of displacements of Pd at high temperatures showed double jumps along the close-packed (111). Differences between the mean-square displacements along x and y were observed. The jumps were found to proceed over activation barriers higher than for single jumps, under conditions predicted for Pd on the channeled W(211).
