If we employ a magnetic fluid as a working fluid, several advantages are expected in electrical control of a hydraulic system. Magnetic fluid is a homogeneous magnetic material just like a solid metal, but it retains its fluid characteristics even under a strong meagnetic field or gravity. Therefore, a flow direction, a velocity and an apparent viscosity of this fluid can easily be controlled by a magnetic force. Our final aim was to establish a new hydraulic control system using a magnetic fluid as a working fluid. First, we examined the relationship between a magnetic force and a deflection angle of a free jet of a magnetic fluid to know the fundamental characteristics of a magnetic fluid in fluidics. The theoretical equation developed, was confirmed by the experimental results. Using Ferricolloid DEA-40, magnitude of the body force increased in proportion to the 1. 726 power of a magnetic field intensity. Furthermore, a deflection angle of a jet was inversely proportional to the square of the velocity of a jet.
