The present work concerns an investigation of the flows associated with three-dimensional rectangular yawed cavities placed within a subsonic boundary layer. Data are presented from a number of different wind tunnel experiments, namely, internal and wake flow measurements using a Laser Doppler anemometer, drag measurements, and unsteady pressure measurements. In addition, flow visualization using the thymol blue technique has been used to identify how the asymmetric nature of the internal cavity flow develops as the yaw angle is changed. The results show that the flow asymmetry and unsteadiness that occurs at yaw angles of about 45° is related to an increase in the cavity drag and an increase in the size and turbulence intensity of the near wake.
